In this 3 credit graduate-level course, students will learn the core competencies and benefits of social emotional learning for schools, students, and adults. Students will have the opportunity to explore a spectrum of strategies to incorporate SEL practices into their classrooms and larger school communities. 

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Learn about the course, instructor and other students
  2. Identify the five SEL core competencies
  3. Understand the academic and mental health benefit of incorporating SEL into their teaching practices
  4. Identify 5 ways to integrate SEL strategies into their teaching practices
  5. Understand how mindfulness supports SEL practices
  6. Understand how SEL practices help build resilience
  7. Identify Pre-K-12th explicit SEL instruction programs/curriculum
  8. Understand the importance of supporting adult SEL 
  9. Incorporate self-care practices into their daily routine
  10. Identify at least three new practices or programs they will begin to incorporate into their teaching practices, classrooms, or school. 

Optional: Adams State University Credit

*Optional Adams State University credit after the class ends (additional $165).

    I have taken several Happy Teacher classes and this has definitely been one of my favorites! I found the activities to be meaningful and closely related to what we, as teachers, do in the classroom and in our lives as we attempt to gain work/life balance. I am excited about the new resources that I learned about, including the SEL curriculums and the mindfulness and resilience activities. I can’t wait to start incorporating these into the classroom in August!
