This class is approved by the Colorado Department of Education to satisfy the 45 hours of ELL professional development required for license renewal.

Educational technology tools complement and enhance effective instructional models for diverse populations of English language learners through increased communication, improved access to content, interactive student-centered lessons and rich language development opportunities.  Technology tools also offer differentiation options, generate data to inform instruction, and provide multiple formats for students to demonstrate their understanding.  This 3 credit graduate-level course focuses on increasing engagement and achievement of ELL students through the exploration and application of educational technology tools for communication, content delivery, literacy development, academic language growth and assessments.  The course content is relevant and applicable to in person instruction, remote learning and hybrid models.

Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

  1. Analyze different types of English Language Learner (ELL) students and their varied learning profiles.
  2. Explain fundamental concepts of the language acquisition process and interpret theories, policies, and legal decisions related to ELL students.
  3. Utilize communication technology tools to increase two way communication with families, strengthen home-school connections, and build family partnerships.
  4. Apply content delivery technology tools to improve access to content, increase engagement and raise achievement for ELLs.
  5. Apply content delivery technology tools to
    1. encourage English language acquisition and development.
    2. differentiate for diverse student populations.
    3. improve access to content, increase engagement and raise achievement for ELLs.
    4. apply literacy development technology tools to encourage English language acquisition and development and differentiate for diverse student populations.
  6. Apply academic vocabulary technology tools to improve access to content, increase engagement and raise achievement for ELLs.
  7. Apply assessment technology tools to monitor progress, collect formative and summative data to inform instruction and create multiple formats for students to demonstrate learning and growth.
