Course Description
It is crucial for educators to understand the difference between 504s and IEPs, which provide distinct support and accommodations for students with disabilities. Understanding these differences enables teachers to meet student needs effectively and ensures legal compliance.Â
By the end of the course, educators will have a high level understanding of the legal requirements and procedural aspects of 504 plans and IEPs. They will be equipped to promote inclusive practices, engage families in the process and foster educational success for all students. This course will empower professionals to ensure that every student receives the support they need to thrive in educational settings.
Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to:
- Analyze the legal frameworks governing the development and implementation of Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and Section 504 plans.
- Understand the IDEA child find process, including its purpose, procedures, and legal requirements, to effectively identify and evaluate students who may be eligible for special education services and supports.
- Demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of the Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) process implemented in your school/district, including its key components, data-driven decision-making, and evidence-based interventions, to effectively support the academic, behavioral, and social-emotional needs of all students.
- Examine the role of family engagement in supporting student success, including effective communication strategies.
- Recognize the benefits of creating an inclusive learning environment for all students, including increased academic engagement, improved social-emotional well-being, and enhanced cultural competency.

This comprehensive, interdisciplinary graduate-level course dives deep into the world of artificial intelligence (AI), with a specific focus on the use of generational conversational AI in educational contexts. Students will explore the historical and theoretical foundations of AI, analyze the ethical challenges presented by AI in education including data privacy, algorithm bias, fairness, and the potential misuse in cheating. Students will then investigate the creative possibilities unlocked by AI integration in the classroom. The course provides a platform to learn, evaluate, and apply generative AI in various aspects of education, such as crafting resourceful lesson plans, innovative assessments, personalized feedback, and differentiated instruction. Hands-on activities and assignments will give students the opportunity to apply AI to the creation of resourceful lesson plans and teaching materials that inspire and engage.
The course progresses to explore how AI can revolutionize assessments and feedback in education, making them more personalized, efficient, and effective. This will involve both a theoretical understanding and practical application of AI in assessments to create a more inclusive and effective learning environment. The final segment of the course focuses on teaching your own students how to use critical thinking and problem solving to leverage AI tools to adapt to the transformative potential of AI.
Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to:
- Describe the history, evolution, and key principles of AI
- Formulate a thorough ethical analysis of AI use in education, with an emphasis on data privacy, fairness, and accessibility
- Design and deliver lessons using generative AI to monitor student progress, collect formative and summative data, and analyze outcomes to inform instructional decisions
- Develop, design, and implement innovative learning strategies and assessments using AI to create differentiated instruction strategies and promote personalized learning

Social-emotional learning (SEL) helps students develop the skills they need to succeed in school and beyond. SEL involves teaching students to recognize and manage their emotions, build positive relationships, make responsible decisions, and communicate effectively. By incorporating SEL into daily instruction, teachers can create a safe and supportive learning environment that fosters social, emotional, and academic growth. SEL can also help students develop resilience, reduce stress, and improve overall well-being. By investing in SEL, teachers can help students develop the skills they need to succeed not only academically, but also build healthy relationships, and navigate challenges throughout their lives.Â
This course is designed to equip educators with the knowledge, skills, and strategies to effectively promote social and emotional learning in their classrooms. Participants will gain a deep understanding of the core SEL competencies, explore evidence-based instructional techniques, and learn to create a safe and inclusive classroom environment. Additionally, educators will gain self-care strategies to support their own social and emotional well-being, enabling them to thrive personally and professionally. This course will empower educators to create a positive and transformative learning experience for themselves and their students.
Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to:
- Evaluate the academic and mental health benefits of incorporating SEL into teaching practices and the classroom.
- Identify the five core competencies of Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) and describe the essential skills that support students’ social, emotional, and academic success.
