Course Description
Nearly 1 in 5 American children and adolescents struggle with obesity. This epidemic presents a significant health concern that schools are ideally positioned to address. It’s proven that healthier and more active students exhibit better school attendance, superior academic performance, and less engagement in risky behaviors, according to the National Center for Education Statistics (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2021).
Schools that prioritize health and wellness for both staff and students report fewer absences, reduced employee turnover, lower healthcare costs, and enhanced student learning outcomes. This course equips educators with resources to support their students in the formation of healthy habits and lifestyles. Through evidence-based strategies for weight management, the course covers healthy eating habits, regular physical activity, anthropometric measurements, and energy requirements for growth and development. Furthermore, educators will explore best practices in establishing and maintaining positive habits. Course activities include pantry and fridge makeovers, food journaling, menu planning, and resources to share newfound knowledge with students and staff, ultimately fostering a healthier school community.
Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to:
- Identify health consequences related to excessive weight and obesity, perform self-assessments using anthropometric measurements, and set personal goals to achieve or maintain a healthy weight.
- Calculate energy requirements, examine a personal food journal to identify areas for improvement, and assist students in developing and maintaining health goals.
- Describe the foundations of a healthy diet to optimize growth and longevity
- Evaluate food labels and portion sizes to make informed decisions.
- Apply the principles of Charles Duhigg’s Habit Loop to enhance mindfulness around daily habits and establish healthier routines through increased self-awareness and targeted behavior modification.
- Apply course knowledge to develop effective, evidence-based strategies for achieving specific health goals.
