Course Description

This class is approved by the Colorado Department of Education to satisfy the 45 hours of ELL professional development required for license renewal.

Students who are English Language Learners have very diverse backgrounds, languages, culture, educational experiences, life histories, family contexts and socioeconomic realities.  Accordingly, effective instructional strategies for ELL students are varied and complex.  This course provides a relevant, practical and accessible toolbox of tips and strategies to support English acquisition, improve access to content,  and increase both engagement and achievement for ELL students.

Upon completion of this course, the participant will be able to:

  • Analyze different types of English Language Learner (ELL) students and their varied learning profiles.
  • Apply practical English Acquisition strategies to improve access to content and increase engagement for ELLs.
  • Implement English Acquisition strategies to increase rigor, expectations and achievement for ELLs.
  • Develop diverse instructional resources and strategies to enhance English Language Acquisition, encompassing areas such as: personal relationships, grouping, vocabulary, speaking, listening, reading, writing, and differentiated assessment.
  • "I loved how everything we learned was practical and applicable to my classroom. There wasn’t any wasted time. Everything was meaningful and useful for a working teacher."

  • "Honestly it literally made me a much better teacher. I am so happy I took this course! I would recommend it to anyone."

  • "I appreciated doing work for this class that I could directly implement into my own teaching. I’m excited that each of the lessons I created through this class helped students learn and achieve success!"

  • "I learned so many helpful strategies for my bilingual students. The information was well-organized which made it easy to process and will ensure that I use it going forward. Very great class!!"

  • "I liked the relevancy of the assignments and the positive, timely feedback from the instructor!"

  • "As a math teacher I don’t often get pushed to think about ELL strategies in my teaching practice. This class helped focus my thinking and my practice."

  • "The assignments were well explained and the slides and videos were great. The self pace was a bonus! Great feedback on each assignment."

  • "I liked the strategies, examples, and tools best. There was so much good information for new and experienced teachers. I would recommend this to any coworker!"

  • "I liked that I could see a lot of different examples and then apply it immediately to my own practice. I also really liked the reflective aspect of the course. It has helped me look at things more closely and serve my students better."

  • "I absolutely loved the whole class. I enjoyed that I could work at my own pace and rewind the video’s when I wanted to think deeper about a strategy."

  • "I had so many great ideas for how to improve lessons for all students, not just ELL. I found the material accessible and direct. The instructor offered really nice feedback that was helpful."

  • "I really appreciated actionable recommendations for how to handle different types of learning/checks for understanding in new and creative ways!
This class applied greatly to the ELL class I taught this year, and I’m very excited to implement these strategies going forward with next year’s students."

  • "I liked the slideshows with all of the examples for each unit in the course. It was helpful to see a variety of examples for each topic, as it helped me to reflect on the things I am already doing and things I could be doing more of or better in the future."

  • "I really enjoyed the self paced structure and the ability to work and complete it at my own pace. The instructor was very timely in her responses and had good insight and comment/suggestions on the work that I submitted. I thought the course was well aligned and it was very beneficial to me. I enjoyed having a chance to reflect on some of my previous lessons and how I might change them to make them better and more accessible to my future ELL’s."

  • "This class is RICH with information, from reminders of great instructional practice, to providing wonderful examples of ideas and research I hadn’t thought of in my nearly three decades of teaching."

  • "I love that it allowed me to reflect on my practices, and provided tools and ideas to better meet the needs of my ELs and ALL my students. I also loved the format of the course.
I was a very reluctant on-line learner, but this course was so easy to follow and user-friendly. I will recommend it to all my teacher friends!"

  • "I love the flexibility of this course. I could start the video, watch and pause when needed, then return to the video and finish the lesson. Having access to the slides was EXTREMELY helpful. Thank you!"

  • "I liked that I could relate each assignment to my own class. I could either think about creating a lesson for next school year or modifying a lesson I already teach to better meet the needs of my EL students. I also liked that the slides were attached. If I wanted to go back to look at something it was easy to find the information in the slides."

  • "I loved so much about this course. I enjoyed the content, the manner it was presented, the fact that I could do the course in my jammies at 1:00am if that was what worked best for me, and the immediate and PERSONAL feedback related to my submitted assignment."

  • "It was straight forward, clear and concise. It connected to my content and I could practice and implement exactly what was being taught."

  • "I like the way the course was laid out. It gave great information auditorily and visually. The assignments made me think and plan differently than I have been. It showed me that planning for ELL students is not as difficult as I thought."

  • "This was WAY better than I expected (I know that sounds bad but I don’t mean it badly). I learned SO much that I can use, not only with my ELL kids but with all my classes! So many interesting ideas.
Plus I also just learned about the different levels of ELL learners and was given several ideas of activities/approaches I can do in class to help them be successful. This truly was a GREAT class!!"

  • "I liked how well it was structured. Everything was organized in a way that made it easy to do this kind of work using self-pacing. I was able to watch the videos, then consider how I would complete the assignment, then go back and use the slides to complete each written piece to submit.
The simple and very practical way it was all set up in Schoology made it easy to get the work done efficiently."

  • "I really enjoyed the content of this course and felt like everything taught was very useful and able to be applied within your classroom. I also liked that professor Moody was easy to contact and quick to respond.
She was very helpful in giving feedback and helping to accommodate other options for me to use with subbing."

  • "I absolutely loved this course for so many reasons! First, I appreciated the ability to work at my pace and the flexibility that this provided me in completing the course. Next, I really liked the format of first watching the video and then being able to complete the assignment.
I appreciated that a lot of the videos had examples included as well. Finally, I really thought that the assignments were relevant and helpful for me to reflect upon past lessons or to plan future instruction for my class and especially my ELL’s."
